Approximately 65,000 undocumented immigrants graduate high school each year, of which, five to ten percent continue their education and attend college. The pressing issue is whether or not undocumented students should be denied access to public higher education. In a recent study involving 447 colleges, it was discovered that 57% of private schools and 29% of public schools provided financial aid for illegal aliens. It is presumed that allowing undocumented immigrants to attend public education institutions and pay lower in-state tuitions has pressured private schools to offer illegal aliens with financial aid.

In addition to offering financial aid, both private and public schools have been known to award scholarships to undocumented immigrants as well. This causes individuals to question whether or not the education system is urging illegal immigrants to go to school and stay in the country undocumented.

While there are many supporters of justly allowing undocumented students their rights to equal and fair education, there are still many institutions who find the matter to be unethical—only 447 out of 2,650 institutions participated in this survey.

For more information about these issues and other immigration needs, please call the Law Offices of Azita M. Mojarad & Associates.

This week, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments for and against the Arizona immigration law. The Justices seemed to support a state’s right to require its police officers to check the immigration status of people who are stopped for other reasons. But we won’t know how the Court rules for at least several weeks. And some parts of the law seemed less popular with the high court. For instance, the Justices questioned the legality of making it illegal to find work or to not carry certain documents.

Meanwhile, thousands of immigrants and the entire state of Arizona have been impacted. This article from the Los Angeles Times explains the fear that many people have about being a victim of racial profiling and the struggles the state has had financially due to boycotts. At the Law Offices of Azita M. Mojarad we are here to help you understand the law and your rights. Instead of waiting for courts to make decisions and for new laws to impact you or your state, contact us for information and guidance.

We are always here to help you know your rights regarding deportation, asylum, work visas and other immigration processes.

At The Law Offices of Azita M. Mojarad, P.C., we hope that when politicians talk about immigration solutions, they speak practically and not politically. Solutions to immigration policies should focus on what’s best for families as well as the talented and hard-working individuals who wish to live and thrive in America. If we do that, our country will always benefit.

A. Seeing our community do the same thing.

The Law Offices of Azita M. Mojarad & Associates is proud to learn of an organization that understands our country’s strategic advantage thanks to its ability to blend all the unique contributions of the nations of the world.

RefugeeOne is the organization, and since 1982 has helped 400 to 500 refugees each year settle in this country, find work and become productive members of this society. It has helped refugees from numerous countries, including Iraq, Haiti, Sudan and Cambodia with housing, job training, mental health and wellness services, and help procuring a Social Security number.

You can learn more about them at www.refugeeone.org. Or read the following article that tells you a little bit about the organization and the people it helps.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has set up a 24-hour, 7-days-a-week toll-free hotline. The number is 855-448-6903. Immigrants being detained can call when they have questions about their rights. Translation services are available in several languages from 7 a.m. until midnight (Eastern time).

Once again, Chicago has been a leader in this arena. The hotline also helps immigrants learn about and avoid scams.

And remember, if you have questions about your rights, you can always contact us!

It will increase the number of educational and outreach events for immigrants who want to launch companies or open markets and stores. It will also work to better connect immigrant-related small business associations with existing City of Chicago resources and will ramp up the foreign language capabilities in the Department of Business Affairs & Consumer Protection.

On May 30, 2011, the Illinois House of Representatives passed a state version of the DREAM Act in a move to help the children of undocumented Illinois residents to afford college.

By a 61-53 vote, the House approved and sent to Gov. Pat Quinn legislation to set up a state fund that would route privately funded college scholarships to as many as 95,000 children of undocumented immigrants. The bill would further allow families of the students to participate in the state’s two college tuition savings programs and also contains provisions to train high school counselors to help undocumented students find ways to pay for their education.

The measure, also pushed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, would allow undocumented immigrants ages 18 to 29 with taxpayer-identification cards to invest in the state’s Bright Start and College Illinois programs.

If Quinn signs the legislation, Illinois would become the first state to create a private scholarship fund for the children of undocumented immigrants.

This is an increase in the current visa validity of three months, single entry.

This change will allow Iranian students and exchange visitors to travel more easily, furthering our goal of promoting the free flow of information and ideas. This important decision is being taken as the global community witnesses the Iranian Government’s increasing censorship and isolation of its own people.

Iranians currently in the United States on a three-month, single-entry visa in one of these categories must reapply outside the United States at a consular post in order to obtain two-year, multiple-entry visas. Keep in mind that the validity of a visa refers to the time period the visa holder has to enter the U.S. It has no bearing on the length of stay permitted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials at the port of entry. Iranian students and exchange visitors in good standing in the United States do not need to apply for a new visa until after they depart the United States.
